Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic form of Hatha Yoga.  The Practice follows a specific sequence of poses co-ordinated with deep breathing that generates a purifying heat within the body.

The first series is the Primary Series is also known as Yoga Cikitsa, or Yoga Therapy.  It tones and strengthens the body, increasing flexibility, releasing blockages and tight areas, so that the body and mind are able to work more efficiently and effectively both on and off the mat.

It is an invigorating and challenging practice.  It can be adapted to suit the specific needs of an individual, and forms an excellent base for self-practice.  It is indisputably a very thorough workout.

History

Ashtanga is one of the traditional styles of Hatha Yoga.  It has been taught by Pattabhi Jois for the last 60 years in his hometown of Mysore.  He was a pupil of Krishnamacharya, and with him rediscovered the sequences that now form the 6 series of Ashtanga Yoga 75 years ago.  He began teaching Westerners in the late 60’s, and recently  the style has become hugely popular in the States and in Europe.  It is also the basis of Power and Vinyasa styles of Yoga.
